Doubles tennisThe obvious is simply stated and insinuated. .. In other words, doubles is a two-on-two match. A total of four tennis players compete in this type of tennis competition.

Two tennis players join forces to compete as a team on opposite ends of the tennis court against another team of two.

Singles vs. Doubles

Singles or doubles, which is more difficult? Due to the various opinions and obvious factors, this is an argumentative and at times endless debate.

Competition in tennis, in my opinion, is competition, but there is a clear distinction in the dynamics of the game when competitors compete in other sports. doubles tennis.

Individual tennis players have less court to cover in doubles (compared to one tennis player on a team in singles), making it less demanding, but not necessarily less challenging than singles.

Tennis competitions in singles and doubles have the same primary goals. Win…

  • points to win games
  • games to win sets
  • sets to win matches
  • In a tennis tournament, every match and, ultimately, the championship are played.

Most of the singles tennis rules and guidelinesThere are a few exceptions to this rule in doubles tennis. To the doubles sidelines, the boundaries are extended from side to side. The court is, first and foremost, larger.

This includes the alleys on the court between the singles and doubles sidelines. Keep in mind that the doubles tennis court boundaries come into play only after the ball has been served.

Doubles Tennis Serving Rotation

Instead of a two-player rotation (singles), a four-player rotation (doubles) is noted and maintained throughout a set.

Let’s say competitors A and B (Team 1) are playing against competitors X and Y (Team 2) in a set. The first game of the set has been determined to be served by Team 2. On Team 1, Player B serves first, while on Team 2, Player X serves first.

  • Game 1 – Player X serves
  • Game 2 – Player B serves
  • Game 3 – Player Y serves
  • Game 4 – Player A serves

For the entire set, the serve rotates – X, then B, then Y, then A, then X, then B… Simply put, every fourth game, each player rotates to serve until the set is completed.

Although strategic game play is important, I recommend that the best server on your team serve first. Teams can decide which player will serve first for their respective team and establish a new rotation in the set(s) that follow.

In comparison to singles, there is a slight increase in serving options in doubles. The server gains the area behind the alley, between the singles and doubles sidelines, along the baseline.

In doubles tennis, the server can serve from anywhere behind and along the baseline, from the center mark to the doubles sideline on the team’s end of the court.

Opt To Receive: Deuce Court or Advantage Court

Teammates must choose whether they want to receive serves on the right service court (deuce court) or the left service court (advantage court) before the game begins. Once this is determined, each player on that team can only return serves for that set from his or her designated service court.

At that point, teammates can switch service court sides to begin a new set, as well as at the start of each subsequent set. It is not possible to switch service courts to receive serves until the set is completed.

Teammates can stand anywhere on the court on the team’s end, as long as the player who is supposed to return the serve actually does so, and not the other player. The receiver usually stands behind the baseline to receive serves, while the teammate stands in or near the adjacent service court.

Don’t Speculate, Communicate

Each time the tennis ball is returned over the net, only one competitor on that team can strike, smash, slice, lob, volley… the ball as it travels from one end of the court to the other. In doubles tennis, communication is crucial.

If only one of the racquets makes contact with the ball, the game continues until one of the teams wins the point. If you and a teammate try to return the same ball and both of your racquets make contact with the ball, the point is awarded to the opposing team.

In fact, after the serve, a teammate might decide to cover the entire court and execute every return in the hopes of winning a point. Although the game is played in pairs, this does not imply that players must take turns striking the ball.

With the exception of returning serves, you are well within the doubles tennis rules and guidelines. This may be necessary on occasion, but if this competitor routinely covers the entire court, expect his or her teammate to become enraged.

The Doubles Tennis Tie-Breaker

Source USA Today

Basically, singles tie-breaker scoringThe doubles tie-breaker follows the same rules as the singles tie-breaker, with one exception. After the initial point is played out and the serving rotation is maintained, the two-point rotation begins, similar to singles.

Above, the serving rotation is maintained, with Player X being the next in line to serve. The only difference is that instead of two players, the two-point serving rotation now includes four. Let’s pretend competitors A and B (Team 1) are in a tiebreaker with competitors X and Y (Team 2).

  • Point 1 – Player X Serves
  • Point 2 – Player A Serves
  • Point 3 – Player A Serves
  • Point 4 – Player Y Serves
  • Point 5 – Player Y Serves
  • Point 6 – Player B Serves
  • Point 7 – Player B Serves
  • Point 8 – Player X Serves
  • Point 9 – Player X Serves

This cycle repeats until one team wins the tie-breaker. The winning team’s tie-breaker scoring results could be 7-1, 7-5, 8-6, 14-12, 21-19, and so on. A team must score a minimum of seven points combined with a two-point advantage to win the tie-breaker and complete the set.

Alternative Doubles Competition

Mixed Doubles The rules and guidelines are still in place, but there is a catch. Each team has one male and one female conditional member. – The term ‘Mixed’ refers to the gender of the participants.

Canadian Doubles– This doubles option necessitates the participation of three players. In other words, this is a match between doubles and singles. This is a two-on-one tournament. There are two players on one side of the court and one player on the other.

Tennis with a twist, but all of the standard tennis rules and guidelines apply. The game is played in three sets, with each player having to play singles in at least one of them. The boundaries of the doubles players are the singles court, and the boundaries of the singles players are the doubles court.

The singles player who wins the majority of the combined games in the match wins the championship.

Australian Doubles Australian Doubles is still doubles vs. singles, but the singles player serves every game and players rotate positions on the court after every game, giving everyone a chance to play singles every third game. – It’s similar to Canadian Doubles, but with a few differences.

Because this is an unofficial style of tennis, tournament officials, coaches in practice, and occasionally players in a pick-up game can determine the score before the game begins. The scoring guidelines aren’t set in stone.

To determine a winner, many people use the Canadian Doubles rules (most combined games won by a singles player).

If the doubles players win, each player on that team receives two points. If the singles player wins the game, he or she receives four points. Let’s pretend a game is worth four points. Another common method is to assign each game a specific point value.

Tennis is considered the ‘sport for a lifetime’.. The United States Tennis Association brilliantly stated this in a memorable slogan aimed at promoting tennis as a lifelong recreational and competitive sport.

Tennis players enjoy the competition, while spectators admire its electrifying nature. Yes, the fast-paced, energetic action of double tennis matches the dynamics of the sport, as it is both stimulating to watch and fun to play.
